Impact of Rare Earth Issue

Price Increases on Linear Fluorescent and Compact Fluorescent Lamps. As a reasult of the Impact on Rare Earth Oxides and the extraordinary circumstances in the lighting industry, most lamp manufacturers will be implementing large price increases in the upcoming months. Affected most are compact fluorescents and linear fluorescent lamps, with most manufacturers showing an average 25% price increase for these products. These increases WILL affect not only our stock cost but contracts, DSOs and SPAs as well. Due to the uncertainty of the situation, there are also potential short-term availability issues with many of the affected lamp types. We appreciate your patience as we work through this widespread industry issue.

Products that earn the ENERGY STAR label by meeting the quality energy efficiency requirements set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are often eligible for utility rebate programs which lower the cost of the product, making it easier for endusers to begin saving energy. To earn an ENERGY STAR label, a 60W LED equivalent must have a minimum light output of 800 lumen, a color temperature of 2700K (for soft-white light), Color Rendering of 80, and a minimum 3 year warranty, among other specifications. The Philips EnduraLED meets or exceeds these specifications with 806 lumens, 2700K, a CRI of 80 and a 6 year warranty.

Philips was also the first – and only – company to have submitted an A19 replacement lamp for the U.S. Department of Energy's L Prize contest, which calls for an LED equivalent to the 60W lamp that can produce 900 lumens using less than 10 watts of electricity. The L Prize is the first government-sponsored competition to encourage innovation in the lighting industry. Since the L Prize submission in the fall of 2009, the Philips lamp has been undergoing field, lab and lifetime testing with the DOE.

EPA Unveils Updated Energy Star Standards for Lighting ASID sent me this article in their Eye on Design Newsletter: Apr 12, 2011 On the heels of announcing new guidelines for TVs, the U.S. EPA has unveiled updated standards for light fixtures. Effective October 1, 2011, to qualify for the Energy Star label, light fixtures will need to increase efficiency 30 percent above currently qualified fluorescent-based fixtures. In 2013, performance requirements will increase further, providing 40 percent higher efficiency compared to currently qualified models.The bulbs in Energy Star-qualified fixtures last at least 10 times longer than standard light bulbs, according to the EPA. The fixtures will continue to meet other strict performance requirements that ensure quick start-up and high quality light output, as well as reduced toxic content in the fixture materials. Additionally, the fixtures will come with a three-year warranty, which is above the industry practice.

I just got back from a SYLVANIA LED road show in Washington, DC. We were able to hear (see and ask about) all the exciting new LED products that SYLVANIA is rolling out this year. There is some really neat stuff to show our customers in the very near future. Hopefully we can host a contractor/end-user specific show when the product becomes available.

A couple things really hit home for me. One is that there are a lot of lighting options - LED is just one of them, and it's not the solution to every lighting challenge. And two, that the light bulb changes mandated by the government are coming up soon. We have some materials available for download on our website for your review:

I just finished eight afternoons at the JATC Local 26 Fall Fest. The trade show is a product of the Credit Union loan program which offers special discounts for the students for tools, clothes, cars and mortgages.

New Energy Efficiency Requirements

In my latest American Lighting Association Technology Update eletter, Terry K. McGowan, FIES, Director of Technology and Engineering writes:

Ban-the-Bulb"? No!
The most important change, because it is likely to generate many consumer inquiries about residential lighting, is the January 1, 2011, requirement in California to replace the standard 100 watt "A-Line" or general service household bulb with a more efficient 72 watt version.

Many of your consumer customers have the impression that this is the result of "ban-the-bulb" legislation such as was passed during the last couple of years in Europe or Australia. That's incorrect. In California, and a year later throughout the U.S., the 100 watt household bulb will be replaced with a lower wattage, more efficient (lumens/watt) version followed by replacements for the 75, 60 and 40 watt lamps in upcoming years. Retail Furniture Store Case Study

Hope you had a nice Memorial Day. I enjoyed a day off! And to extend my break a little bit more, Pete Rotkis, part of our Lighting/Energy Management team has sent in a guest post:

There are many ways to become more green and it isn't just CFL's and LED's (although those are two good options.) I recently completed a job using energy saving halogen lamps. My customer was a high end furniture shop in Georgetown. We needed something that would beautifully show their products and work with their existing lighting fixtures, as well as, save them energy.

After reviewing the space and conducting an energy audit, I recommended replacing their old 90 watt PAR lamps with a Philips Halogen Energy Advantage IR PAR 38 Lamp which would use 70 watts. This simple switch saved them 20 watts per lamp for each of the 137 lamps in the retail space, gave them the same light output, and extended the lamp life. This gave the customer energy savings as well as maintenance savings with a return on investment of under a year.

We've started stocking LED screw-in PAR & MR16's from Maxlite. We have the 5-watt PAR20 in both cool & warm (equal to a 40-watt incandescent), the 10-watt PAR30 (equal to 60-watt), and the 12-watt PAR38 (equal to 75-watt). And then we also have an MR16 that is 4 watts, equal to 30 watts. These LED lamps will last 50,000 hours and have a CRI of 80. They use Cree LED's which are known for their excellent quality.

We subscribe to Bill Attardi's "Energy Watch". This e-letter is always filled with information on the Lighting and Energy Management front. I just received the April issue in my mailbox. One of the last points talked about the Energy-Efficient Commercial Buildings Tax Deduction:

Still Active - The federal Energy Policy Act of 2005 established a tax deduction for energy-efficient commercial buildings applicable to qualifying systems and buildings placed in service from January 1, 2006, through December 31, 2007. This deduction was subsequently extended through 2008, and then again through 2013 by Section 303 of the federal Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 (H.R. 1424, Division B), enacted in October 2008.

A tax deduction of $1.80 per square foot is available to owners of new or existing buildings who
install (1) interior lighting; (2) building envelope, or (3) heating, cooling, ventilation, or hot water
systems that reduce the building’s total energy and power cost by 50% or more in comparison to a building meeting minimum requirements set by ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2001. Energy savings must be calculated using qualified computer software approved by the IRS.

There is a lot of talk about energy saving products and lighting is at the forefront of this discussion. It's good to remember when you are evaluating your lighting, that every application has a different solution (and sometimes several.) For instance, in a store display area, using swirl compact fluorescents in the track heads or recessed lighting fixtures when you are trying to sell a product is not the best choice. There are other energy saving solutions that include enclosed fluorescent lamps, energy saving incandescent lamps, and LED's that will help you achieve your desired energy savings, as well as be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. That sells more product and gives you happier customers.
